All motor vehicles must be licensed and insured in accordance with the Bahamas Road Traffic Act. The Department was created by Parliament in 1958 and has regulatory oversight for road safety, traffic regulations, vehicle licensing, vehicle registration and Inspection, driving licenses and the collection of fees and taxes related to ground transportation.
